Ophthalmoscopy
Ophthalmoscopy

Ophthalmoscopy is a diagnostic method used to examine the ocular fundus, allowing assessment of the retina, optic nerve, and retinal blood vessels. The procedure is widely applied for the diagnosis of glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and other ophthalmic as well as systemic diseases.

When is ophthalmoscopy required?

  • Decreased visual acuity, blurred vision, or distortion of objects.
  • Diagnosis of glaucoma, retinal detachment, or macular hole.
  • Monitoring the ocular fundus in patients with diabetes mellitus and arterial hypertension.
  • Assessment of the optic nerve in neurological disorders.
  • Routine examinations in patients with high myopia and age-related ocular changes.

How is ophthalmoscopy performed?

  1. Preparation. In some cases, mydriatic eye drops are used to dilate the pupil.
  2. Use of an ophthalmoscope. The physician directs a light beam into the eye to visualize the fundus.
  3. Examination of the retina and optic nerve. The macula, retinal vessels, and peripheral areas are carefully evaluated.
  4. Clinical conclusion. If abnormalities are detected, additional diagnostic tests may be recommended.

Types of ophthalmoscopy

  • Direct ophthalmoscopy. Provides a magnified view of the central part of the ocular fundus.
  • Indirect ophthalmoscopy. Allows examination of the peripheral retina.
  • Ophthalmoscopy with optical lenses (fundus lens). Provides a wider and more detailed view of the fundus.

Which conditions can be detected by ophthalmoscopy?

  • Glaucoma (optic nerve head changes associated with elevated intraocular pressure).
  • Diabetic retinopathy (damage to retinal blood vessels).
  • Age-related macular degeneration (degenerative changes in the central retina).
  • Central retinal vein thrombosis and other retinal circulatory disorders.
  • Retinal detachment, retinal tears, and peripheral retinal degeneration.

Advantages of ophthalmoscopy in Belarus

  • Painless and safe. The procedure is non-invasive and does not require direct contact with the eye.
  • High diagnostic accuracy. Enables detection of even minimal changes in the ocular fundus.
  • Fast examination. The procedure typically takes 5–10 minutes.

In Belarus, ophthalmoscopy is performed in modern ophthalmology clinics equipped with advanced diagnostic devices. This method allows accurate early detection of fundus pathologies, enabling timely treatment and prevention of complications.
