Keratotopography
Keratotopography

Corneal topography is a computerized diagnostic method used to assess the shape, curvature, thickness, and optical power of the cornea. It is an essential tool in ophthalmology for detecting corneal disorders, selecting contact lenses, and preparing patients for laser vision correction.

Indications for corneal topography

  • Diagnosis of keratoconus, keratoglobus, and other corneal diseases.
  • Assessment of the corneal surface before laser vision correction (LASIK, PRK).
  • Selection and fitting of rigid gas-permeable or orthokeratology contact lenses.
  • Monitoring corneal condition after eye surgery or trauma.
  • Detection of astigmatism and corneal shape changes associated with contact lens wear.

How is corneal topography performed?

  1. The patient fixates on a luminous target inside the device.
  2. A specialized corneal topographer scans the cornea and creates a detailed surface map.
  3. Computer software analyzes the data and generates a color-coded map of corneal curvature.
  4. The procedure takes only a few minutes and does not involve contact with the eye.

Types of corneal topography

  • Placido-based topography. Analyzes the reflection of concentric rings on the corneal surface.
  • Scheimpflug topography. Uses optical sectioning to assess corneal structure and thickness.
  • Optical coherence–based topography. A high-precision method providing 3D corneal visualization.

Advantages of corneal topography in Belarus

  • Non-contact and rapid examination.
  • Enables early detection of corneal diseases.
  • Essential before laser vision correction and intraocular lens implantation.
  • Facilitates individualized contact lens selection.

In Belarus, corneal topography is performed in modern ophthalmology clinics equipped with high-tech diagnostic systems. This method allows for accurate evaluation of corneal condition and supports the selection of the most appropriate vision correction strategy.
