Keratopachymetry
Keratopachymetry

Corneal pachymetry is a diagnostic method used to measure the thickness of the cornea. It is widely applied to assess ocular health before laser vision correction, to improve glaucoma diagnostics, and to detect corneal diseases such as keratoconus.

Indications for corneal pachymetry

  • Preoperative assessment before laser vision correction (LASIK, PRK).
  • Glaucoma diagnostics, including accurate interpretation of intraocular pressure based on corneal thickness.
  • Detection of keratoconus, corneal dystrophies, and inflammatory corneal disorders.
  • Monitoring corneal condition after ophthalmic surgeries.
  • Measurement of corneal thickness prior to implantation of phakic intraocular lenses.

How is corneal pachymetry performed?

  1. The patient fixes their gaze on a light target.
  2. A pachymetry device (optical or ultrasound-based) scans the cornea and measures its thickness.
  3. The results are displayed numerically in micrometers (µm).
  4. The procedure takes only a few minutes and does not require special preparation.

Types of corneal pachymetry

  • Optical pachymetry (non-contact method). Commonly used in modern diagnostic systems.
  • Ultrasound pachymetry. A contact method that provides very high measurement accuracy.

Advantages of corneal pachymetry in Belarus

  • Fast and highly accurate measurement of corneal thickness.
  • Painless and comfortable for the patient.
  • Improves risk assessment and monitoring of glaucoma.
  • An essential diagnostic step before laser vision correction.

In Belarus, corneal pachymetry is performed in modern ophthalmology clinics equipped with advanced non-contact and high-precision diagnostic devices. Experienced specialists ensure accurate evaluation and an individualized approach when preparing patients for surgery and diagnosing corneal diseases.
