Intravitreal injections
Intravitreal injections

Intravitreal injections are a method of administering medications directly into the vitreous body of the eye. This approach is used to treat macular edema, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, and other serious retinal diseases.

How is the procedure performed?

  1. Anesthesia. Topical anesthetic eye drops are used to ensure patient comfort.
  2. Antiseptic preparation of the eye to minimize the risk of infection.
  3. Injection into the vitreous body. The medication is delivered using a very fine needle.
  4. Post-procedure observation. The patient remains under short-term medical supervision.

Which medications are administered intravitreally?

  • Anti-VEGF agents. These inhibit abnormal blood vessel growth in AMD and diabetic retinopathy.
  • Corticosteroids. Used to reduce retinal inflammation and edema.
  • Antibiotics and antifungal agents. Applied in infectious retinal conditions.

Recovery after the injection

  • Temporary mild discomfort or redness of the eye may occur.
