Chalazion treatment
Chalazion treatment

Chalazion is a chronic inflammatory condition of the meibomian gland of the eyelid, caused by obstruction of its duct, leading to the formation of a dense, usually painless nodule. Without treatment, a chalazion may increase in size, cause discomfort and cosmetic concerns, and in some cases become infected.

Symptoms of chalazion

  • Formation of a firm nodule on the eyelid.
  • Mild redness of the skin in the affected area.
  • Swelling and a sensation of pressure on the eye.
  • In some cases – suppuration, tenderness, or rupture of the capsule with discharge.

Causes of chalazion

  • Obstruction of the meibomian glands due to increased lipid secretion.
  • Chronic blepharitis, demodicosis, seborrheic dermatitis.
  • Reduced immunity, frequent respiratory infections, gastrointestinal disorders.
  • Improper use of contact lenses or eye cosmetics.

Diagnostic methods

  • Ophthalmologic examination. The physician assesses the condition of the eyelids and the extent of inflammation.
  • Biomicroscopy. Allows detailed evaluation of the structure of the lesion.
  • Bacteriological analysis of discharge (in recurrent cases).

Treatment methods for chalazion

  • Conservative (medical) treatment. At early stages, anti-inflammatory eye drops (often containing antibiotics and corticosteroids), warm compresses, and eyelid massage are used.
  • Intralesional injection therapy. Injection of corticosteroids (triamcinolone, betamethasone) into the chalazion capsule promotes its resolution.
  • Surgical removal. Performed for large or recurrent chalazia and involves a small incision with excision of the capsule.
  • Laser removal. A modern minimally invasive method in which the chalazion capsule is ablated using a laser, usually without traditional incisions.

Recovery after treatment

  • After surgery, patients are prescribed eye drops or ointments to promote healing.
  • It is recommended to avoid touching the operated area and to refrain from using cosmetics during the first days.
  • With conservative treatment, strict eyelid hygiene and avoidance of hypothermia are important.

Advantages of modern chalazion treatment in Belarus

  • Laser and injection-based treatments may help avoid surgical intervention.
  • Procedures are quick, usually suture-free, and associated with a low risk of recurrence.
  • Minimally invasive techniques ensure rapid recovery.

In Belarus, chalazion treatment is provided in modern ophthalmology clinics equipped with advanced surgical and laser technology. Specialists apply gentle treatment approaches, including laser ablation and intralesional steroid therapy, helping to minimize complications and shorten the recovery period.
