Cataract treatment
Cataract treatment

Cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens that leads to a gradual deterioration of vision. Without timely treatment, the condition may result in significant visual impairment or even complete vision loss. The only effective treatment for cataract is surgical replacement of the cloudy lens with an artificial one, known as an intraocular lens (IOL).

Symptoms of cataract

  • Blurred or hazy vision.
  • Reduced brightness and contrast of colors.
  • A sensation of a film or veil in front of the eyes.
  • Difficulty reading, driving, or performing close-up work.
  • Increased sensitivity to light and glare.

Diagnostic methods for cataract

How is cataract surgery performed?

  1. Preoperative assessment. Selection of the appropriate intraocular lens model.
  2. Phacoemulsification. The cloudy lens is fragmented and removed using ultrasound energy.
  3. Intraocular lens implantation. A flexible IOL is inserted into the capsular bag of the eye.
  4. Completion of surgery. The procedure takes approximately 15–20 minutes and is performed on an outpatient basis.

Recovery after surgery

  • Vision usually begins to improve within the first few days.
  • Full adaptation to the new lens may take several weeks.
  • It is important to follow medical recommendations and use prescribed eye drops.
  • Physical exertion should be limited during the first weeks after surgery.

Advantages of modern cataract treatment in Belarus

  • Minimally invasive, sutureless procedure.
  • Rapid recovery and absence of pain.
