Treatment of acquired aplastic anemia
Treatment of acquired aplastic anemia

Acquired aplastic anemia is a rare but severe disorder of the hematopoietic system in which the bone marrow stops producing a sufficient number of blood cells. Without timely treatment, the disease can lead to serious complications, including severe anemia, infections, and bleeding.

When is treatment required?

Treatment is necessary when a decrease in red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets is detected in a complete blood count. Therapy is indicated in cases of pronounced weakness, frequent infections, bleeding gums, spontaneous bruising, and bleeding, as well as after confirmation of the diagnosis by myelogram and bone marrow biopsy.

How is treatment carried out?

Treatment of aplastic anemia involves a comprehensive approach:

  • Immunosuppressive therapy – used in cases with an autoimmune mechanism of the disease; includes antithymocyte globulin (ATG), cyclosporine, and corticosteroids.
  • Bone marrow transplantation – the only curative treatment option for young patients with severe forms of aplastic anemia.
  • Blood and blood component transfusions – supportive therapy for critically low levels of red blood cells and platelets.
  • Antibacterial and antifungal therapy – used to prevent and treat infectious complications.
  • Hematopoietic growth factors – stimulate the production of blood cells by the bone marrow.

Main advantages of comprehensive treatment

The use of modern immunosuppressive and transplantation-based therapies significantly increases the chances of recovery. A personalized treatment approach reduces the risk of complications and improves overall treatment effectiveness.
