Treatment of melanoma
Treatment of melanoma

Melanoma is an aggressive form of skin cancer that develops from pigment-producing cells known as melanocytes. This type of cancer can spread rapidly to other parts of the body, making early detection and timely treatment critically important. Modern melanoma treatment includes surgical intervention, immunotherapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapy, allowing effective disease control and significantly improving recovery outcomes.

Methods of melanoma treatment

  • Surgical removal of the tumor is the primary treatment for melanoma, especially in early stages. During surgery, not only the tumor itself but also surrounding tissue is removed to reduce the risk of recurrence. If melanoma has spread to regional lymph nodes, lymph node dissection may be required.
  • Immunotherapy is used to enhance the body’s immune response against cancer cells. Immune checkpoint inhibitors stimulate the immune system, enabling it to recognize and destroy malignant cells more effectively. This method is widely used in metastatic melanoma.
  • Chemotherapy is applied to destroy cancer cells, particularly when the disease has already spread. Chemotherapeutic agents may help reduce tumor burden and slow further progression.
  • Targeted therapy involves drugs that act on specific molecular abnormalities within melanoma cells, suppressing their growth and spread. Targeted therapy is especially effective in melanomas with certain genetic mutations, such as BRAF mutations.
  • Radiotherapy may be used when melanoma cannot be surgically removed or if it recurs after surgery. It can also be applied to control metastatic lesions in other organs.

When should medical attention be sought?

  • When changes occur in existing moles, such as growth, changes in color or shape, or bleeding.
  • When new skin lesions or moles appear, especially if they are asymmetrical or have irregular borders.
  • If painful, itchy, or non-healing skin areas develop.
  • For regular preventive skin examinations, particularly for men and women over 40 years of age or individuals with increased risk, such as a family history of skin cancer.
