Treatment of laryngeal cancer
Treatment of laryngeal cancer

Laryngeal cancer is a malignant tumor that develops in the tissues of the larynx—an organ responsible for voice production and breathing. Laryngeal cancer most commonly affects men over the age of 50 and is strongly associated with smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and chronic inflammatory diseases of the throat. Modern treatment methods, including surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy, make it possible to effectively manage the disease and significantly improve the chances of recovery.

Methods of treatment for laryngeal cancer

  • Surgical treatment is the main treatment option for laryngeal cancer. Depending on the stage of the disease and tumor location, partial or total removal of the larynx (laryngectomy) may be performed. In partial laryngectomy, key laryngeal functions such as speech may be preserved, whereas total laryngectomy involves complete removal of the organ and requires specialized rehabilitation, including voice restoration using a speech prosthesis.
  • Radiotherapy is used to destroy cancer cells using high-energy radiation. It may be applied as a primary treatment or in combination with surgery—either preoperatively to reduce tumor size or postoperatively to eliminate residual cancer cells. Radiotherapy is also used to treat metastases in lymph nodes and other organs.
  • Chemotherapy is used to destroy cancer cells that may have spread beyond the larynx. Chemotherapeutic drugs are often combined with radiotherapy (concurrent chemoradiation) to enhance treatment effectiveness or used in cases of metastatic disease that is not responsive to radiation alone.
  • Immunotherapy helps activate the patient’s immune system to fight cancer cells. It is primarily used in advanced or metastatic laryngeal cancer, when the disease has spread to other organs, and may be combined with other treatment modalities.
  • Targeted therapy involves drugs that act on specific molecular pathways responsible for tumor growth and progression. This approach helps block key oncogenic mechanisms while minimizing damage to healthy tissues.

Advantages of laryngeal cancer treatment in Belarus

  • Modern diagnostic techniques, such as laryngoscopy and biopsy, enable early detection of laryngeal cancer, significantly improving treatment outcomes.
  • Individualized treatment planning. Management of laryngeal cancer often involves a combination of surgical, radiation, and systemic therapies, allowing physicians to tailor treatment to each patient’s clinical condition.
  • Long-term outcomes. Contemporary treatment strategies help patients achieve long-term remission, improve quality of life, and reduce the risk of recurrence.

When should medical attention be sought?

  • If symptoms such as persistent hoarseness, painful or difficult swallowing, throat or neck pain, or unexplained weight loss occur.
  • If risk factors are present, including smoking, alcohol abuse, chronic throat conditions, or a family history of cancer.
  • For regular preventive examinations, especially for individuals over 50 years of age, to ensure early detection of the disease.
