Treatment of esophageal cancer
Treatment of esophageal cancer

Esophageal cancer is a malignant tumor that develops in the tissues of the esophagus, the main channel through which food passes from the mouth to the stomach. Modern approaches to the treatment of esophageal cancer include surgical intervention, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and targeted therapy, which significantly improve the chances of successful treatment and long-term survival.

Methods of esophageal cancer treatment

  1. Surgical treatment. Surgery is one of the main treatment options for esophageal cancer, especially at early stages of the disease. Depending on the location and size of the tumor, partial or total removal of the esophagus (esophagectomy) may be performed. In some cases, reconstruction of the esophagus is carried out using other tissues of the patient’s body.
  2. Chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is used to destroy cancer cells and prevent their spread to other organs. It can be administered before surgery (neoadjuvant therapy) or after surgery (adjuvant therapy) to reduce the risk of recurrence. Chemotherapy is also applied in advanced stages of the disease to slow tumor progression.
  3. Radiotherapy. Radiotherapy is used in the treatment of esophageal cancer, particularly when surgery is not possible. High-energy radiation is applied to destroy cancer cells or to reduce tumor size prior to surgery. Radiotherapy is often combined with chemotherapy (chemoradiotherapy) to enhance therapeutic effectiveness.
  4. Targeted therapy. This approach involves the use of drugs that act on specific molecular pathways responsible for cancer cell growth and division. Targeted therapy helps slow or stop tumor progression while minimizing damage to healthy tissues.
  5. Palliative treatment. In advanced stages of esophageal cancer, when curative treatment is no longer feasible, palliative care is provided. Its goal is to improve quality of life, relieve symptoms, and support essential bodily functions. This may include esophageal stenting to improve swallowing or pain management with analgesic medications.
