Pregnancy care in Belarus
Pregnancy care in Belarus

Pregnancy care is a comprehensive set of medical measures aimed at ensuring the health of both the mother and the unborn child at all stages of pregnancy. In Belarus, pregnancy care is regulated by state clinical standards and is provided in both public and private medical institutions. The primary goal is continuous monitoring of pregnancy, prevention and early detection of possible complications, preparation for childbirth, and medical support throughout the entire gestational period.

Main stages of pregnancy care

Pregnancy management in Belarus includes regular medical supervision during all trimesters:

First trimester (up to 12 weeks):

  • Initial registration of pregnancy;
  • First ultrasound examination (US) to confirm pregnancy and determine gestational age;
  • Screening tests for genetic abnormalities;
  • Blood and urine tests, screening for infectious diseases.

Second trimester (13–27 weeks):

  • Regular medical check-ups (usually once every 4 weeks);
  • Second ultrasound scan to assess fetal development and exclude congenital anomalies;
  • Routine blood and urine tests to monitor maternal health;
  • Consultations with specialists if required (endocrinologist, cardiologist, etc.).

Third trimester (28 weeks and later):

  • More frequent medical visits (every 2 weeks);
  • Third ultrasound scan to assess fetal growth and prepare for childbirth;
  • Blood coagulation tests, monitoring hemoglobin and other key indicators;
  • Preparation for delivery, including counseling on maternity hospital selection, breastfeeding, and postpartum care.

Tests and examinations during pregnancy

Pregnancy care includes mandatory and additional tests and examinations that help monitor the health of both mother and child:

  • Complete blood count and urinalysis — performed regularly throughout pregnancy to control the health state of the woman.
  • Biochemical blood tests — used to assess the function of internal organs.
  • Screening for infections — HIV, syphilis, hepatitis, and other infections that may affect pregnancy outcomes.
  • Three screening ultrasound examinations — one in each trimester.
  • Cardiotocography (CTG) — performed in late pregnancy to monitor fetal heart activity.
  • Doppler ultrasound — assessment of blood flow in uterine arteries and umbilical vessels to evaluate placental and fetal circulation.

Pregnancy care in case of complications

If pregnancy is complicated by conditions such as gestosis (preeclampsia), threatened miscarriage, diabetes mellitus, or other medical conditions, enhanced medical supervision is required:

  • Increased frequency of medical visits;
  • Additional diagnostic tests and laboratory monitoring;
  • Hospitalization when necessary for continuous observation or treatment.

Childbirth in Belarus

Childbirth in Belarus is provided in state maternity hospitals as well as in selected private clinics. Several delivery options are available:

  • Vaginal delivery. In most cases, childbirth occurs naturally, with medical teams ready to intervene if complications arise.
  • Cesarean section. Performed when vaginal delivery poses risks to the mother or the baby.
  • Partner-assisted delivery. Belarusian legislation allows the presence of a partner or family member during childbirth.

Pregnancy care in Belarus represents a structured and comprehensive medical system focused on protecting maternal and fetal health. Mandatory prenatal supervision ensures access to high-quality medical care at every stage of pregnancy. Women can choose between public and private healthcare providers, allowing for safe, comfortable, and well-supported pregnancy and childbirth experiences.
