Childbirth in Belarus
Childbirth in Belarus

Pregnancy care in Belarus includes a comprehensive set of medical measures aimed at ensuring the health of both the mother and the child. The mandatory antenatal care system guarantees access to high-quality medical services at all stages of pregnancy. Women can choose between public and private healthcare facilities, which allows for comfortable and safe conditions during pregnancy and childbirth.

Pregnancy care system in Belarus

Belarus operates a mandatory antenatal follow-up system for pregnant women. This means that every woman who is registered for pregnancy care undergoes regular examinations and receives medical services free of charge in public outpatient clinics and antenatal care units. Private medical centers also offer pregnancy care services on a paid basis.

Tests and examinations during pregnancy

Pregnancy management includes mandatory and additional tests and examinations that help monitor the health of the mother and the fetus:

  • Complete blood count and urinalysis — performed regularly throughout pregnancy to monitor the woman’s general health.
  • Biochemical blood tests — used to detect possible abnormalities in internal organ function.
  • Infectious disease screening — HIV, syphilis, hepatitis, and other infections that may affect maternal and fetal health.
  • Three screening ultrasound examinations — performed once in each trimester to assess fetal development.
  • Cardiotocography (CTG) — carried out in late pregnancy to monitor fetal heart rate.
  • Doppler ultrasound — assessment of blood flow in the uterine arteries and umbilical vessels to evaluate fetal condition and uteroplacental circulation.

Pregnancy care in case of complications

If complications such as preeclampsia, threatened miscarriage, diabetes mellitus, or other conditions occur, the woman is transferred to enhanced medical supervision:

  • The frequency of medical visits is increased;
  • Additional tests and examinations are prescribed;
  • Hospitalization may be required for continuous monitoring or treatment.

Types of childbirth

  • Vaginal delivery: in most cases, childbirth occurs naturally, with medical staff ready to provide assistance if complications arise.
  • Cesarean section: performed when vaginal delivery is impossible or poses a risk to the mother or the child.
  • Partner-assisted childbirth: partner or family member presence during labor is permitted in Belarus.

Postpartum rehabilitation

Belarus has a well-developed postpartum care and rehabilitation system, which includes:

  • Consultations on newborn care.
  • Physiotherapy services and recovery programs for women after childbirth.
  • Psychological support for new mothers, especially after complicated deliveries or in cases of postpartum depression.
