Treatment of hydrocephalus
Treatment of hydrocephalus

Hydrocephalus is a pathological condition in which an excessive amount of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) accumulates within the cavities of the brain. This can lead to increased intracranial pressure, impaired brain function, and serious complications. Modern treatment methods make it possible to effectively manage hydrocephalus and significantly improve patients’ quality of life.

Symptoms of hydrocephalus

  • Increase in head circumference (in children).
  • Headaches, typically worse in the morning.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Visual disturbances (blurred vision, reduced visual acuity, diplopia).
  • Fatigue and drowsiness.
  • Problems with coordination and balance.
  • Memory impairment and cognitive decline (in adults).

Causes of hydrocephalus

  • Congenital malformations of brain development.
  • Previous infections (meningitis, encephalitis).
  • Brain tumors obstructing CSF flow.
  • Head injuries.
  • Stroke or intracranial hemorrhage.

Treatment methods for hydrocephalus

Conservative treatment.

  • Used in early stages or when surgery is temporarily contraindicated.
  • Includes medications aimed at reducing intracranial pressure, improving CSF outflow, and decreasing cerebral edema.

Surgical treatment.

  • The main treatment approach for hydrocephalus.
  • Shunt surgery: implantation of a shunt system to divert excess CSF from the brain to other body cavities (most commonly the abdominal cavity).
  • Endoscopic ventriculocisternostomy (EVC): creation of a pathway for physiological CSF circulation using endoscopic techniques.
  • Removal of tumors or obstructive lesions in cases of secondary hydrocephalus.

Rehabilitation.

  • Includes physiotherapy, neuropsychological support, and regular clinical monitoring.
  • Aims to restore cognitive and physical functions.

Advantages of hydrocephalus treatment in Belarus

  • Effective symptom relief with rapid reduction of intracranial pressure and restoration of CSF circulation.
  • Minimally invasive techniques that reduce surgical risks and shorten recovery time.
  • High treatment effectiveness, with most patients returning to normal life after surgery.
  • Long-term control of recurrence through properly functioning shunt systems.

Treatment of hydrocephalus in Belarus is carried out in modern neurosurgical centers using advanced diagnostic and therapeutic technologies. Highly qualified specialists provide an individualized approach for each patient. Affordable treatment costs combined with a high standard of medical care make Belarus an attractive destination for patients from different countries.
