Treatment of craniosynostosis
Treatment of craniosynostosis

Craniosynostosis is a congenital condition characterized by the premature fusion of one or more cranial sutures in newborns. This abnormal fusion can lead to skull deformities, increased intracranial pressure, and impaired brain development. Modern treatment methods for craniosynostosis allow effective correction of cranial deformities and support normal neurological development in children.

Symptoms of craniosynostosis

  • Abnormal head shape (asymmetry, elongation, or flattening).
  • Frontal bossing or asymmetry of the forehead.
  • Disproportionate head growth or atypical skull contour.
  • Signs of increased intracranial pressure: headaches, irritability, vomiting.
  • Delayed psychomotor or cognitive development in severe cases.

Types of craniosynostosis

  • Scaphocephaly: premature fusion of the sagittal suture, resulting in an elongated skull.
  • Brachycephaly: early closure of the coronal suture, leading to a shortened skull.
  • Plagiocephaly: cranial asymmetry caused by unilateral fusion of a coronal suture.
  • Trigonocephaly: fusion of the metopic suture, resulting in a triangular-shaped forehead.

Treatment methods for craniosynostosis

  1. Cranial reconstruction (cranioplasty): open surgical correction of skull shape.
  2. Endoscopic surgery: minimally invasive separation of fused sutures, usually performed in early infancy.
  3. Reconstructive surgery: restoration of normal skull and facial anatomy.

Postoperative therapy.

Use of cranial orthotic helmets to guide proper skull shaping. Regular follow-up examinations and monitoring of skull growth.

Rehabilitation.

Physiotherapy aimed at supporting motor and cognitive development. Ongoing neurological follow-up to assess brain development.

When should medical attention be sought?

  • If cranial deformity is detected in a newborn or infant.
  • If a physician identifies signs of premature cranial suture closure.
  • In the presence of symptoms suggestive of increased intracranial pressure.

Advantages of craniosynostosis treatment in Belarus

In Belarus, craniosynostosis is treated in specialized pediatric neurosurgical centers. Modern diagnostic techniques, including MRI and CT imaging, as well as advanced surgical technologies, are widely used. Highly qualified surgeons provide an individualized approach for each child. Affordable treatment costs make Belarus an attractive option for international patients seeking high-quality pediatric neurosurgical care.
