Treatment of pituitary adenoma
Treatment of pituitary adenoma

Pituitary adenoma is a benign tumor that develops in the pituitary gland, the body’s main endocrine gland. This condition can affect hormone production, vision, and overall health. Modern treatment methods make it possible to manage pituitary adenomas effectively, restoring normal endocrine function and improving the patient’s quality of life.

Symptoms of pituitary adenoma

  • Headaches caused by tumor pressure.
  • Visual disturbances (reduced visual acuity, narrowing of visual fields).
  • Hormonal disorders (increased or decreased hormone levels).
  • Fatigue, weakness, decreased libido.
  • Changes in body weight.
  • Menstrual irregularities in women, decreased potency in men.

Diagnosis of pituitary adenoma

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Allows precise determination of the size and location of the adenoma.
  • Hormonal tests. Blood tests to assess hormone levels and identify endocrine disturbances.
  • Ophthalmologic examination. Assessment of visual function when optic nerve compression is suspected.

Treatment methods for pituitary adenoma

Medical therapy.

  • Used for hormonally active adenomas (for example, prolactinomas).
  • Medications are prescribed to normalize hormone levels and reduce tumor size.
  • Drug therapy is particularly effective for prolactinomas and some other adenoma types.

Surgical treatment.

  • Transsphenoidal surgery. A minimally invasive technique for adenoma removal through the nasal passages.
  • Craniotomy. Used in complex cases when the tumor is large or has an atypical location.

Radiation therapy.

  • Used for hormonally active adenomas or residual tumor tissue after surgery.
  • Radiosurgery (for example, Gamma Knife) allows highly precise destruction of tumor tissue without damaging surrounding structures.

Observation.

  • Applied in patients with small, non-functioning adenomas that do not cause symptoms.
  • Includes regular monitoring of tumor size and the patient’s clinical condition.
