Treatment of torticollis
Treatment of torticollis

Torticollis (wry neck) is a condition in which the patient’s head is tilted to one side while the neck and cervical muscles remain tense, leading to pain and restricted mobility. The condition may be congenital or acquired, and its treatment is aimed at relieving pain, restoring normal posture, and improving neck mobility. Depending on the type of torticollis, treatment may include medication, physiotherapy, or, in some cases, surgical intervention.

When is treatment for torticollis required?

  • In cases of chronic neck pain accompanied by persistent muscle tension and spasm.
  • When neck mobility is limited and head tilt becomes painful and interferes with normal posture.
  • If symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, or breathing difficulties occur, which may develop due to prolonged compression of nerve roots.
  • When conservative treatment methods are ineffective and more intensive intervention is required.

Treatment methods for torticollis

Conservative treatment

  • Pharmacological therapy – the use of analgesic and anti-inflammatory medications to relieve pain and reduce inflammation in the neck area.
  • Physiotherapy – therapeutic exercises aimed at stretching and strengthening cervical muscles, helping to improve mobility and prevent further deformity.
  • Massage and manual therapy to relieve muscle tension in the neck and restore normal range of motion.
  • Use of orthopedic devices – wearing a cervical brace or Shantz collar to support the cervical spine and reduce muscular load.
  • Botulinum toxin injections (in cases of persistent muscle spasm) to relax muscles and alleviate excessive tension.

Surgical treatment

  • Surgical intervention may be required when conservative methods fail or when torticollis is caused by structural abnormalities, such as spinal or nerve root damage.
  • Neck muscle plastic surgery – a procedure aimed at restoring the normal position of cervical muscles and improving mobility.
  • Correction of cervical vertebrae or vascular structures if torticollis is associated with such abnormalities.

Recovery after treatment of torticollis

  • Rehabilitation with physiotherapy to improve neck mobility, strengthen muscles, and correct posture.
  • Use of orthopedic supports to protect the neck and prevent excessive strain during the recovery period.
  • Ongoing monitoring of treatment progress through regular examinations and imaging studies to assess effectiveness and prevent complications.
