Spinal decompression
Spinal decompression

Spinal decompression is a therapeutic approach aimed at reducing pressure on nerve roots and spinal structures. This method is used to treat spinal disorders that cause pain, restricted mobility, and neurological dysfunction.

Goals of spinal decompression

  1. Relief of compression affecting nerve roots and the spinal cord.
  2. Reduction of pain syndrome.
  3. Restoration of normal blood circulation within spinal structures.
  4. Improvement of spinal mobility and functional capacity.
  5. Prevention of complications such as paralysis and chronic pain.

Indications for spinal decompression

  1. Intervertebral disc herniation and disc protrusion. Compression of nerve roots caused by disc bulging.
  2. Spinal stenosis. Narrowing of the spinal canal leading to compression of the spinal cord or nerve roots.
  3. Radiculitis. Inflammation or irritation of spinal nerve roots.
  4. Spondylolisthesis. Vertebral displacement resulting in mechanical nerve compression.
  5. Osteochondrosis. Degenerative changes of intervertebral discs causing pain and limited movement.
  6. Compression fractures of the spine. Due to trauma or osteoporosis.
  7. Tumors and infectious processes. Leading to compression of spinal structures.

Spinal decompression methods in Belarus

Non-surgical (conservative) decompression:

This approach is used in the absence of severe structural spinal abnormalities.

Traction therapy (spinal traction):

  • Reduces pressure on intervertebral discs by controlled stretching.
  • Performed using specialized mechanical devices or manual techniques.
  • Applied in the treatment of disc herniation, protrusions, and radiculopathy.

Physiotherapy:

  • Electrotherapy, laser therapy, and magnetic therapy. These methods reduce inflammation and pain while improving blood circulation.
  • Massage therapy. Relaxes muscles and decreases pressure on the spine.

Therapeutic exercise (physical therapy):

  • Strengthens the muscular support (core) of the spine.
  • Improves flexibility and spinal stability.

Kinesiotaping. The use of special elastic tapes to unload spinal structures and muscles.

Manual therapy and osteopathy. These methods restore proper vertebral alignment and relieve tension from nerve roots.

Surgical decompression:

Indicated in cases of significant nerve compression that cannot be resolved through conservative treatment.

  1. Laminectomy. Removal of part of the vertebral bone (lamina) to decompress nerve roots or the spinal cord.
  2. Microdiscectomy. Minimally invasive removal of a portion of a herniated disc.
  3. Foraminotomy. Enlargement of the intervertebral foramen to release a compressed nerve root.
  4. Corpectomy. Removal of a damaged vertebral body followed by replacement with an implant.
  5. Spinal fusion (spondylodesis). Stabilization of vertebrae using metal fixation systems to prevent displacement.

Minimally invasive techniques:

  • Laser disc vaporization (partial evaporation of disc tissue to reduce intradiscal pressure).
  • Radiofrequency ablation (primarily for pain control).

Rehabilitation after spinal decompression

  1. Physical activity. Gradual restoration of movement with targeted back-strengthening exercises.
  2. Physiotherapy. Accelerates tissue healing and improves circulation.
  3. Orthopedic braces. Provide spinal support during recovery.
  4. Weight control. Reduces mechanical load on the spine.
  5. Lifestyle modification. Proper posture and minimization of excessive spinal strain.

Advantages of spinal decompression

  • Effective pain relief.
  • Improved quality of life.
  • Prevention of neurological complications.
  • Potential restoration of normal spinal function.

Spinal decompression in Belarus is an effective treatment option that helps alleviate pain and improve quality of life in patients with spinal disorders. Depending on the severity of compression and the patient’s condition, both conservative and surgical methods are used. Timely consultation with a specialist and strict adherence to medical recommendations are key to successful treatment and recovery.
