Labiaplasty
Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting the shape, size, or symmetry of the labia minora. The operation is performed for medical and/or aesthetic reasons and may be indicated to relieve physical discomfort caused by enlarged or asymmetric labia, as well as at a woman’s request to improve the appearance of the external genitalia.

Indications for labiaplasty

Indications for labiaplasty may be medical or aesthetic:

  1. Physical discomfort. Enlarged labia minora may cause irritation, pain, or discomfort during physical activity (sports, cycling, running). Discomfort when wearing tight clothing or underwear. Pain or discomfort during sexual intercourse due to friction and tissue tension.
  2. Aesthetic concerns. Dissatisfaction with the appearance of the labia, asymmetry, or excessive size causing psychological discomfort or reduced self-confidence. Desire to improve the aesthetic appearance of the genital area.
  3. Postpartum changes. After childbirth, some women experience changes in the shape and size of the labia minora, which may lead to discomfort or aesthetic concerns.
  4. Congenital features. Anatomical variations, such as congenital labial hypertrophy, may also be an indication for labiaplasty.

Types of labiaplasty

  1. Reduction labiaplasty. The most common technique, involving reduction of the size of the labia minora by excising excess tissue to decrease length or volume.
  2. Symmetry correction labiaplasty. Performed to equalize the size and shape of the labia when one side is significantly larger or has a different contour.
  3. Labiaplasty with clitoral hood reduction. In some cases, the procedure includes correction of the clitoral hood to improve aesthetic outcomes and, in selected cases, functional comfort.
  4. Filler-based labiaplasty. A non-surgical option involving injection of dermal fillers (e.g., hyaluronic acid) to restore volume or contour of the labia majora.

How is labiaplasty performed in Belarus?

Labiaplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia, although general anesthesia may be used in selected cases. The procedure typically lasts from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the extent of surgery. Main stages include:

  1. Anesthesia. Local anesthesia is administered to numb the surgical area; general anesthesia may be chosen for more extensive procedures or at the patient’s request.
  2. Excision of excess tissue. The surgeon carefully removes excess labial tissue, correcting shape, symmetry, and length. Techniques may involve a scalpel, laser, or radiofrequency device.
  3. Suturing. Absorbable sutures are placed, which dissolve naturally over several weeks and do not require removal.
  4. Post-procedure observation. The patient remains under short-term medical supervision after the operation.

Recovery after labiaplasty

  1. Rest. During the first few days, physical activity should be limited, with emphasis on rest.
  2. Hygiene. Careful intimate hygiene is required; antiseptic solutions and prescribed topical medications may be used for wound care.
  3. Avoid physical exertion. For 4–6 weeks, patients should avoid sports, heavy lifting, and strenuous activity.
  4. Sexual intercourse should be avoided for 4–6 weeks to allow complete tissue healing.
  5. Cold compresses. Application of cold packs during the first days may help reduce swelling and discomfort.

Labiaplasty generally provides long-lasting and satisfactory results, helping to relieve physical discomfort and improve self-confidence. Final results are usually assessed 1–3 months after surgery, once swelling has resolved and tissues have fully healed.

Labiaplasty is a widely performed and effective procedure that addresses both functional and aesthetic concerns related to the labia. With modern surgical techniques and a relatively short recovery period, it is considered a safe and reliable option for improving quality of life.
