Thyroiditis treatment
Thyroiditis treatment

Thyroiditis is an inflammatory disease of the thyroid gland that may be caused by autoimmune, infectious, or toxic factors. Depending on the form of the disease, treatment is aimed at reducing inflammation, normalizing hormonal balance, and preventing complications.

When is treatment for thyroiditis required?

  • With enlargement of the thyroid gland and a sensation of pressure in the neck area.
  • If fatigue, irritability, tachycardia, and excessive sweating are present — possible signs of thyrotoxicosis.
  • With reduced thyroid function (hypothyroidism) — weakness, cold intolerance, edema, and weight gain.
  • In cases of pain in the thyroid region and discomfort when swallowing.
  • If antibodies to thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO) are detected in the blood — a marker of autoimmune thyroiditis.
  • With elevated body temperature and symptoms of viral infection (in subacute thyroiditis).

Main forms of thyroiditis and their treatment

Autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis)

  • Diagnostics: blood tests for TSH, T3, T4, anti-TPO antibodies; thyroid ultrasound.
  • Treatment: hormone replacement therapy in hypothyroidism; correction of iodine, selenium, and vitamin D deficiency; anti-inflammatory therapy during active inflammation.

Subacute thyroiditis (de Quervain’s thyroiditis)

  • Diagnostics: complete blood count, ESR, C-reactive protein, TSH, T3, T4.
  • Treatment: anti-inflammatory therapy; beta-blockers for thyrotoxicosis; thyroxine replacement therapy if hypothyroidism develops.

Acute thyroiditis (suppurative, infectious)

  • Diagnostics: blood tests (leukocytosis, elevated ESR), bacteriological culture, ultrasound.
  • Treatment: broad-spectrum antibiotics; antipyretics and analgesics; in severe cases — surgical drainage of an abscess.

Postpartum thyroiditis

  • Diagnostics: blood tests for thyroid hormones, anti-TPO antibodies; ultrasound.
  • Treatment: beta-blockers for thyrotoxicosis; hormone therapy if hypothyroidism develops.

How is thyroiditis treated?

  1. Diagnosis and determination of the type of thyroiditis.
  2. Selection of therapy (hormone replacement, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial).
  3. Correction of diet and supplementation (iodine, selenium, vitamin D).
  4. Monitoring of TSH, T4, antibody levels, and thyroid status (ultrasound).
