Treatment of the pituitary gland
Treatment of the pituitary gland

The pituitary gland is the main endocrine gland that regulates the function of the thyroid gland, adrenal glands, gonads, and other organs. Disorders of pituitary function can lead to serious hormonal imbalances affecting metabolism, growth, reproductive function, and the nervous system.

When is treatment of the pituitary gland required?

  • Hormonal disorders (hyposecretion or hypersecretion of hormones) manifested by weight changes, fatigue, menstrual irregularities, and decreased libido.
  • Pituitary adenomas – tumor formations that may cause hormonal disturbances and neurological symptoms.
  • Acromegaly or gigantism – excessive secretion of growth hormone.
  • Headaches, visual impairment, increased intracranial pressure – possible compression of adjacent structures by a tumor.
  • Disorders of prolactin secretion – infertility, nipple discharge, decreased potency.
  • Symptoms of diabetes insipidus – frequent urination, excessive thirst, dehydration.
  • Cushing’s disease – obesity, hypertension, thinning of the skin, elevated cortisol levels.

How are pituitary disorders treated?

Diagnostics

  • Blood tests for pituitary hormones (prolactin, TSH, ACTH, GH, FSH, LH).
  • MRI of the pituitary gland with contrast – detection of adenomas and structural abnormalities.
  • Dexamethasone or insulin suppression/stimulation tests – assessment of the hypothalamic–pituitary axis.
  • Ophthalmologic examination – in pituitary tumors affecting vision.

Conservative treatment

  • Medications that suppress hormone overproduction (for example, dopamine agonists for prolactinomas).
  • Hormone replacement therapy in cases of pituitary hormone deficiency.
  • Correction of cortisol, testosterone, estrogen, and thyroxine levels depending on the identified disorder.

Surgical treatment (for pituitary tumors)

  • Endoscopic transnasal surgery – minimally invasive removal of adenomas through the nasal passages.
  • Conventional surgery – used for large tumors compressing surrounding structures.

Radiation therapy

  • Used for inoperable tumors or as an adjunct to surgical treatment.

Follow-up and rehabilitation

  • Regular follow-up with an endocrinologist.
  • Monitoring of hormonal status.
  • Restoration of body functions after treatment.

Main advantages of timely pituitary treatment in Belarus

  • Restoration of hormonal balance – normalization of weight, metabolism, and overall well-being.
  • Prevention of complications – reduced risk of osteoporosis, diabetes, and hypertension.
  • Preservation of vision and neurological function – timely tumor removal prevents progression.
  • Maintenance of reproductive function – infertility treatment and normalization of the menstrual cycle.
  • Modern minimally invasive treatment methods – shorter rehabilitation period.

Diagnosis and treatment of pituitary disorders in Belarus are performed using modern methods, including MRI, endoscopic surgery, and hormonal correction. Experienced endocrinologists and neurosurgeons ensure safe and effective treatment.
