Skin biopsy
Skin biopsy

Skin biopsy is a diagnostic procedure in which a physician removes a small sample of skin for further microscopic examination. Skin biopsy is performed to diagnose a wide range of dermatological conditions, including infectious, inflammatory, autoimmune, and oncological diseases (such as skin cancer).

Skin biopsy allows accurate determination of the nature of a skin disorder and helps establish a definitive diagnosis, which is essential for selecting appropriate treatment. In Belarus, this procedure is available in private clinics, medical centers, and hospitals.

Indications for skin biopsy

Skin biopsy may be recommended in the following situations:

  1. Suspicion of skin cancer: if suspicious skin lesions are present—such as moles that change in size, shape, or color, or non-healing ulcers—a biopsy helps determine whether the lesion is malignant.
  2. Diagnosis of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases: skin biopsy is used to diagnose conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, lichen planus, vasculitis, and other inflammatory skin disorders.
  3. Identification of infectious processes: when bacterial, fungal, or viral infections are suspected, biopsy can help identify the causative agent.
  4. Unclear or atypical skin eruptions: if skin rashes or lesions have an unclear etiology, biopsy helps establish an accurate diagnosis.
  5. Suspicion of cutaneous lymphomas or systemic diseases: biopsy may be required to diagnose diseases that affect both the skin and internal organs.

Types of skin biopsy

Several types of skin biopsy are used, depending on the nature and location of the lesion:

  1. Shave biopsy: this technique involves removal of the superficial layers of the skin. Shave biopsy is suitable for diagnosing superficial lesions such as actinic keratosis or superficial forms of skin cancer.
  2. Punch biopsy: using a circular instrument (punch), a cylindrical sample of skin is removed, including all skin layers (epidermis, dermis, and sometimes subcutaneous fat). This is the most commonly used method for diagnosing inflammatory conditions and small tumors.
  3. Incisional biopsy: only a portion of the suspicious lesion is removed. This method is used when deep lesions require sampling while preserving the majority of the lesion for further observation.
  4. Excisional biopsy: complete removal of the lesion along with a margin of surrounding healthy tissue. This method is typically used for both diagnosis and treatment of malignant tumors, such as melanoma.

How skin biopsy is performed in Belarus

Skin biopsy is usually performed on an outpatient basis and takes up to 30 minutes. The procedure is carried out under local anesthesia to minimize patient discomfort.

The biopsy specimen is sent to a pathology laboratory for histological examination. Results are usually available within several days to a few weeks, depending on the complexity of the analysis. A pathologist examines the tissue under a microscope to determine whether there are signs of inflammation, infection, malignancy, or other pathological changes.

  • Benign results: indicate absence of malignancy. The physician may recommend observation or further treatment depending on the clinical context.
  • Malignant results: if cancerous changes are detected, the physician discusses further steps with the patient, which may include additional investigations, surgical excision, or other forms of therapy.
