Treatment of arterial hypertension
Treatment of arterial hypertension

Arterial hypertension (high blood pressure) is a chronic condition characterized by persistently elevated pressure in the arterial system. It is one of the most common cardiovascular diseases and may lead to serious complications such as stroke, myocardial infarction, heart failure, and kidney damage. The treatment of hypertension is aimed at lowering blood pressure and preventing these complications.

Causes of arterial hypertension

  • Genetic predisposition.
  • Overweight and a sedentary lifestyle.
  • Excessive salt and alcohol intake.
  • Chronic stress and depression.
  • Kidney diseases and endocrine disorders.

Symptoms of hypertension

In the early stages, hypertension may be asymptomatic. As the disease progresses, the following symptoms may appear:

  • Headache, especially in the occipital region.
  • Dizziness.
  • Tinnitus.
  • Shortness of breath and palpitations.
  • Chest pain.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of hypertension is based on regular blood pressure measurements, which allow accurate determination of disease severity. Additional investigations may include blood tests, electrocardiography (ECG), echocardiography (cardiac ultrasound), urinalysis to detect target organ damage, and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring.

Treatment methods

  • Pharmacological therapy: prescription of antihypertensive medications aimed at lowering blood pressure. These may include diuretics, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, and other drug classes.
  • Lifestyle modification: weight normalization, regular physical activity, smoking cessation, reduction of salt intake, and stress management.
  • Management of comorbidities: treatment of diabetes mellitus, kidney diseases, and endocrine disorders.
  • Individualized treatment plan: selection of medications and dosages depends on the stage of hypertension, presence of complications, and patient-specific factors.

After achieving blood pressure control, it is essential to continue treatment, follow medical recommendations, and monitor blood pressure regularly. Patients are also advised to avoid excessive physical strain and stress and to maintain cardiovascular health.

Treatment of arterial hypertension allows effective blood pressure control, prevention of complications, and long-term preservation of health.
