Stent-graft implantation is a modern minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat diseases of the aorta and major arteries, such as aneurysms and aortic dissection. A stent-graft is a combination of a metallic framework (stent) and a tubular prosthesis covered with synthetic material (graft). The device is delivered via a catheter and implanted into the affected segment of the vessel, reinforcing the vascular wall and preventing rupture.
When is stent-graft implantation required?
Main indications for the procedure include:
- Abdominal or thoracic aortic aneurysm. Pathological dilatation of the arterial wall with a high risk of rupture.
- Aortic dissection. Separation of the layers of the aortic wall associated with a life-threatening risk of rupture.
- Traumatic vascular injuries. Resulting from accidents, blunt or penetrating trauma, or other external factors.
- Arterial occlusion. Blockage of a vessel by a thrombus or an atherosclerotic plaque.
How is the procedure performed?
- Preoperative assessment. Before the intervention, the patient undergoes comprehensive diagnostics, including vascular ultrasound, CT angiography, or MR angiography to determine the exact location and dimensions of the affected vessel segment.
- Procedure. The intervention is performed under local or general anesthesia. Through a small incision or puncture in the femoral artery, the physician introduces a catheter carrying the stent-graft.
- Stent-graft deployment. Under fluoroscopic guidance, the stent-graft is advanced to the target zone and deployed inside the vessel, where it is securely fixed, reinforcing the vessel wall.
- Completion. Once implanted, the stent-graft restores normal blood flow and effectively eliminates the risk of vessel rupture.
Advantages of stent-graft implantation in Belarus
- Minimal invasiveness. The procedure is performed via a vascular puncture without the need for extensive open surgery.
- Short recovery period. Most patients resume normal activities within a relatively short time.
- High efficacy. Stent-grafts provide reliable reinforcement of the vessel and significantly reduce the risk of complications.
- Suitable for high-risk patients. The technique can be safely applied in elderly patients and individuals with significant comorbidities.
Stent-graft implantation is an effective and safe method for treating diseases of the aorta and major arteries. It minimizes surgical risks and shortens the recovery period while maintaining a high level of therapeutic effectiveness. Regular follow-up and adherence to medical recommendations allow patients to maintain an active and high-quality life after the procedure.
Stent-graft implantation procedures in Belarus are performed in leading medical centers using advanced equipment. Highly qualified vascular surgeons ensure a high level of safety and clinical effectiveness, reducing procedural risks and optimizing postoperative rehabilitation.
