Dopplerography
Dopplerography

Doppler ultrasonography (Doppler study) is an ultrasound diagnostic method used to assess blood flow in blood vessels and to identify arterial and venous pathologies. The technique is based on the Doppler effect, which makes it possible to visualize the speed and direction of blood flow within vessels.

The main purposes of Doppler ultrasonography include the diagnosis of vascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, thrombosis, thrombophlebitis, varicose veins, and aneurysms. Doppler studies also allow evaluation of blood supply to various organs, including the brain, upper and lower extremities, as well as internal organs such as the liver and kidneys. An important application is postoperative monitoring, for example after stent placement, bypass surgery, or vascular reconstruction. The procedure is also used for preventive screening in patients with risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, obesity, and smoking.

How is Doppler ultrasonography performed? The patient is positioned comfortably, either lying down or sitting. A special gel is applied to the skin to improve contact with the ultrasound probe. The physician then uses an ultrasound transducer to examine the vessels and assess blood flow. The procedure usually lasts 20–40 minutes.

Advantages of Doppler ultrasonography in Belarus

  • The procedure does not require punctures or any invasive interventions.
  • The method is safe for pregnant women, children, and elderly patients.
  • High diagnostic value: it allows detection of a wide range of vascular diseases.
  • Results are available immediately after the examination.

What does Doppler ultrasonography show?

  • Speed and direction of blood flow.
  • Vessel patency.
  • Presence of atherosclerotic plaques or thrombi.
  • Thickening of vessel walls.
  • Aneurysms and narrowing (stenosis).
  • Varicose vein disease.
  • Impaired blood supply to organs (hypoxia).

Possible indications for Doppler ultrasonography

  • Headaches, dizziness, ringing in the ears.
  • Sensation of numbness or weakness in the limbs.
  • Leg swelling and pain during walking.
  • Arterial hypertension.
  • Diabetes mellitus (to assess vascular complications).
  • Preventive screening in smokers.
  • Pregnancy (to assess fetal blood circulation).

Doppler ultrasonography is a safe, non-invasive, and highly informative diagnostic method that helps detect vascular diseases at an early stage. Timely consultation with a physician and performance of this examination make it possible to prevent serious complications such as thrombosis, stroke, and myocardial infarction. Regular screening is recommended for individuals with risk factors and symptoms of impaired blood circulation.

Q&A
