Sperm DNA fragmentation test
Sperm DNA fragmentation test

Sperm DNA fragmentation test in Belarus plays an important role in the diagnosis of male infertility and in treatment planning.

DNA fragmentation refers to breaks in the DNA strands of spermatozoa, which can disrupt the transmission of genetic information and reduce the likelihood of successful fertilization. A high level of fragmentation may cause fertility problems, lead to early miscarriages, and also decrease the chances of success in assisted reproductive technology procedures such as IVF and ICSI.

When is the analysis necessary?

Sperm DNA fragmentation analysis is recommended in cases where a couple experiences difficulties conceiving despite normal semen analysis results, as well as in the following situations:

  • Repeated failures of IVF or ICSI procedures;
  • Early miscarriages;
  • Male age over 40 years;
  • Presence of harmful habits (smoking, alcohol abuse);
  • Exposure to occupational or environmental factors (toxins, radiation);
  • Chronic inflammatory diseases.

In Belarus, several methods are used to assess sperm DNA fragmentation:

  1. TUNEL test — determines breaks in sperm DNA strands using fluorescent labeling. This is one of the most widely used and informative methods.
  2. SCSA — sperm chromatin structure analysis, which detects DNA damage and instability.
  3. COMET assay — allows evaluation of the level of DNA damage using gel electrophoresis.

DNA fragmentation test helps physicians make more accurate decisions when selecting infertility treatment methods, especially when traditional diagnostic approaches fail to reveal clear causes of fertility problems. This test has become an important component of infertility diagnostics and planning of assisted reproductive technologies.
