Ultrasound of the thymus gland
Ultrasound of the thymus gland

Ultrasound examination of the thymus (thymic gland) is a non-invasive diagnostic method that allows visualization of the thymus and identification of possible abnormalities. The thymus plays a key role in the immune system by participating in the maturation and differentiation of T lymphocytes, which help the body fight infections and tumors.

When is ultrasound of the thymus indicated?

Ultrasound of the thymus is most commonly performed in the following situations:

  • Immune system disorders — reduced immune response or frequent infections.
  • Suspected tumors of the thymus (for example, thymoma).
  • Conditions associated with hypertrophy or atrophy of the thymus.
  • Developmental disorders in children — the thymus plays a crucial role in immune system development in infants and children.
  • Suspected autoimmune diseases that may affect thymic function.

Advantages of thymus ultrasound

  1. Safety — ultrasound does not involve radiation and is completely safe for the body.
  2. Accuracy — the method allows assessment of thymic structure and early detection of abnormalities.
  3. Painlessness — the procedure causes no pain or discomfort.
  4. Accessibility — ultrasound is widely available and performed in most medical institutions.

How is thymus ultrasound performed?

The ultrasound examination of the thymus is quick and painless. The patient lies on their back, and a special gel is applied to the chest area to improve the transmission of ultrasound waves. Using an ultrasound transducer, the physician evaluates the size, shape, and structure of the thymus. The procedure usually takes 10–20 minutes.

The examination can be performed in leading medical centers in Belarus, where qualified specialists provide accurate assessment of thymic condition and recommend appropriate further management.
