Retroperitoneal ultrasound is an imaging examination that allows accurate assessment of organs located behind the abdominal cavity. This method is used to diagnose diseases of the kidneys, adrenal glands, major vessels, lymph nodes, and other structures situated in the retroperitoneal space.
When is retroperitoneal ultrasound indicated?
Retroperitoneal ultrasound is recommended in the following situations:
- Lower back pain, especially when kidney or adrenal gland disorders are suspected.
- Swelling or edema in the abdominal or lumbar region, which may be associated with dysfunction of retroperitoneal organs.
- Arterial hypertension — to evaluate kidney and adrenal conditions that may cause secondary high blood pressure.

- Circulatory disorders, such as aneurysms or thrombosis of large vessels located in the retroperitoneal area.

The procedure usually takes 15–30 minutes. The patient lies on their back while the physician applies a special gel to the abdominal area to improve contact between the ultrasound transducer and the skin. The transducer is gradually moved across the abdomen and lower back to examine the retroperitoneal organs.
To improve diagnostic accuracy, the patient may be asked to hold their breath briefly or change body position during the examination.
