Pelvic ultrasound is an imaging examination that allows detailed assessment of organs located in the pelvic region, such as the uterus, ovaries, prostate gland, urinary bladder, and other structures. This method helps detect various conditions, including inflammatory processes, tumors, cysts, congenital anomalies, and other pathologies.

When is pelvic ultrasound indicated?

Pelvic ultrasound may be recommended in the following situations:

• Painful menstruation or menstrual cycle disorders, such as irregular or heavy bleeding.
• Pelvic pain — discomfort or pain in the lower abdomen or lower back that may be associated with disorders of the reproductive organs.
• Suspicion of ovarian or uterine diseases, such as fibroids, cysts, endometriosis, or cancer.

1. Transabdominal ultrasound — performed through the abdominal wall. The patient lies on their back, and a special gel is applied to the abdomen. The physician moves the transducer over the abdomen to obtain images of the pelvic organs. A full bladder may be required for optimal visualization.
2. Transvaginal ultrasound — performed through the vagina. This method is used for more detailed evaluation of female pelvic organs, such as the uterus and ovaries. The patient lies on her back, and a specially designed transducer is gently inserted to obtain high-resolution images. This approach is commonly used when more precise diagnostics are needed.
3. In men, pelvic ultrasound may be performed transabdominally or using a transrectal probe to assess the prostate gland.
