Neck ultrasound is an imaging examination that allows detection of diseases affecting the neck organs, such as the thyroid gland and lymph nodes, as well as assessment of blood vessels, including the carotid arteries. This method is safe and non-invasive, making it an effective tool for diagnosing a wide range of conditions.

When is neck ultrasound indicated?

Neck ultrasound may be recommended in the following situations:

  • Thyroid gland disorders — for diagnosing conditions such as nodules, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, inflammatory diseases, and tumors.
  • Enlarged lymph nodes — when cervical lymph nodes are enlarged or painful, which may be associated with infections, inflammatory processes, or malignancies.
  • Pain or discomfort in the neck area — including neck pain, difficulty swallowing, or breathing problems that may indicate pathology of the neck organs.
  • Circulatory disorders — to evaluate the condition of the carotid arteries and other neck vessels, especially when atherosclerosis or other vascular diseases are suspected.
  • Masses or cysts — to detect tumors or cystic formations in the neck that may affect surrounding tissues.

How is neck ultrasound performed?

During neck ultrasound, the patient lies on their back or in a semi-reclined position. A special gel is applied to the neck to improve contact between the ultrasound probe and the skin. The physician moves the transducer over the neck, examining the organs, lymph nodes, and blood vessels. The examination allows visualization of the thyroid gland, soft tissues, and vascular structures, helping to identify any pathological changes.

The procedure takes approximately 15–20 minutes, and the patient can return to normal activities immediately afterward. For optimal accuracy, patients should consult their physician in advance if any specific preparation is required.
