Ultrasound of the mammary glands
Ultrasound of the mammary glands

Breast ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging method that allows detection of various breast conditions, including cysts, fibroadenomas, inflammatory changes, as well as benign and malignant tumors. This examination plays an important role in prevention and early diagnosis of breast diseases, including breast cancer.

When is breast ultrasound indicated?

Breast ultrasound is recommended in the following situations:

  • Detection of lumps or breast pain during self-examination.
  • Menstrual cycle disorders or hormonal changes that may affect breast tissue.
  • A feeling of heaviness or tenderness in the breasts, especially in the premenstrual period.
  • Preventive screening for women, particularly after the age of 40 or with a family history of breast cancer.
  • Follow-up of breast changes such as masses or cysts detected on mammography.
  • Monitoring breast condition during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Advantages of breast ultrasound

  1. Safety — ultrasound does not involve ionizing radiation and is completely safe for health.
  2. Accuracy — allows precise detection of cysts, tumors, and other structural abnormalities in breast tissue.
  3. Painlessness — the procedure is non-invasive and does not cause discomfort.
  4. Accessibility — breast ultrasound is widely available and can be performed quickly.

How is breast ultrasound performed?

The breast ultrasound procedure usually takes about 10–15 minutes. The patient lies on her back, and the physician applies a special gel to the skin to improve transmission of ultrasound waves. The transducer is then moved across the surface of the breast to examine the glandular tissue. This examination allows identification of tumors, cysts, and inflammatory processes within the breast.

For women of reproductive age, breast ultrasound is usually performed during the first half of the menstrual cycle to minimize the influence of hormonal fluctuations on breast tissue.

When should you see a doctor for a breast ultrasound?

If you notice a lump, breast pain, or changes in the shape of the breast, it is important to undergo ultrasound for accurate diagnosis. Regular preventive examinations are also recommended, especially for women over 40 years of age or those with risk factors such as a genetic predisposition to breast cancer.

Breast ultrasound is available in leading clinics in Belarus, where experienced specialists provide accurate diagnostics and recommend appropriate treatment options.
