Ultrasound of the lungs
Ultrasound of the lungs

Lung ultrasound is an imaging method that helps assess the condition of lung tissue and identify diseases of the respiratory system. Although ultrasound is not the primary diagnostic tool for lung diseases, it is useful for detecting pleural effusion, tumors, inflammatory changes, and for monitoring lung status in various clinical conditions.

When is lung ultrasound indicated?

Lung ultrasound is recommended in the following cases:

  • Shortness of breath, cough, and chest pain, especially in patients with chronic respiratory diseases.
  • Pleurisy — inflammation of the pleura that may lead to fluid accumulation in the pleural cavity.
  • Suspicion of lung tumors or lung cancer.
  • Pneumonia or other inflammatory lung diseases.
  • Pulmonary edema — often associated with heart failure or other systemic conditions.
  • Chest trauma, when assessment of lung tissue and pleural space is required.

Advantages of lung ultrasound

  1. Safety — ultrasound does not involve ionizing radiation and is completely safe for the patient.
  2. Accuracy — allows detection of lung abnormalities such as pleural effusion, tumors, or inflammatory changes.
  3. Painlessness — the procedure does not cause discomfort or pain.
  4. Accessibility — lung ultrasound is widely available and does not require extensive preparation.

How is lung ultrasound performed?

The lung ultrasound procedure is simple and fast. The patient may lie down or remain seated while the physician applies a special gel to the chest wall to improve contact with the ultrasound transducer. The transducer is moved along the surface of the chest to examine the lungs and pleura. Ultrasound can reveal findings such as pleural fluid, inflammatory consolidations, or masses that may not always be visible on standard chest X-ray.

Lung ultrasound can be performed in leading clinics in Belarus, where experienced specialists provide accurate diagnosis and recommend effective treatment strategies.
