Liver ultrasound is an imaging examination that allows accurate assessment of the liver and biliary system, helping to identify conditions such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, tumors, cysts, and other liver diseases. It is a safe, non-invasive, and effective diagnostic method for evaluating liver health.
When is liver ultrasound indicated?
Liver ultrasound may be recommended in the following cases:
- Pain in the right upper quadrant — discomfort or acute pain in the liver area may indicate conditions such as hepatitis or gallstone disease.
- Jaundice — yellowing of the skin and mucous membranes, which may suggest liver or biliary tract disorders.
- Digestive problems — including nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite, potentially related to liver or gallbladder disease.
- Suspicion of liver tumors or cysts — to detect abnormal lesions in the liver or other abdominal organs.
- Regular monitoring of liver condition — in patients with chronic liver diseases such as viral hepatitis or cirrhosis.
- Abnormal blood test results — elevated liver enzymes (ALT, AST) or other biochemical markers.
Advantages of liver ultrasound
- Safety — ultrasound does not involve ionizing radiation and is safe for patients.
- Accuracy — allows reliable detection of liver conditions such as cirrhosis, hepatitis, tumors, cysts, fibrosis, and other abnormalities.
- Painlessness — the procedure is painless and does not require anesthesia or invasive intervention.
- Accessibility — liver ultrasound is widely available and typically takes only 15–20 minutes.
How is liver ultrasound performed?
During the examination, the patient lies on their back or side. A special gel is applied to the abdominal area to improve contact between the ultrasound transducer and the skin. The physician moves the transducer over the right upper abdomen to examine the liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts. The procedure usually lasts 15–20 minutes and does not cause discomfort.
Liver ultrasound may be supplemented with Doppler imaging to assess hepatic blood flow and identify possible vascular abnormalities.
Liver ultrasound is available in leading clinics in Belarus, where specialists perform high-quality examinations and provide personalized diagnostic conclusions and treatment recommendations.
