Ultrasound of the kidneys and bladder
Ultrasound of the kidneys and bladder

Kidney and bladder ultrasound is an imaging examination that allows assessment of the kidneys, urinary bladder, and urinary tract. This method helps detect conditions such as urolithiasis, pyelonephritis, tumors, cysts, and other disorders of the urinary system.

When is kidney and bladder ultrasound indicated?

Kidney and bladder ultrasound may be recommended in the following cases:

  • Lower back or abdominal pain — chronic or acute pain in the kidney area, lumbar region, or lower abdomen may be associated with various kidney and bladder diseases, such as stones, inflammation, or infections.
  • Frequent or painful urination — symptoms such as increased urinary frequency, pain during urination, or a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying.
  • Edema — swelling of the legs, face, or abdominal area, which may be related to impaired kidney function.
  • Suspected urinary tract infections — symptoms including fever, painful urination, blood in the urine, or cloudy urine, which may indicate infection or inflammation of the urinary tract.
  • Monitoring of patients with chronic kidney diseases — such as chronic pyelonephritis, diabetic nephropathy, or hypertension.
  • Suspicion of tumors — for detection of neoplastic lesions in the kidneys or urinary bladder, as well as postoperative follow-up of these organs.

Advantages of kidney and bladder ultrasound

  1. Safety — ultrasound does not use ionizing radiation, making it safe for patients of all age groups, including pregnant women.
  2. Accuracy — enables detection of kidney and bladder conditions such as stones, cysts, tumors, inflammatory changes, and other abnormalities.
  3. Painlessness — the procedure is completely painless and does not require invasive interventions.
  4. Accessibility — kidney and bladder ultrasound is available in most medical institutions and typically takes only 15–20 minutes.

How is kidney and bladder ultrasound performed?

During the examination, the patient lies on their back, and a special gel is applied to the abdominal area to improve contact between the ultrasound transducer and the skin. The physician moves the transducer over the abdomen and lumbar region to examine the kidneys, urinary bladder, and urinary tract. The procedure usually lasts 15–20 minutes and does not cause discomfort.

In some cases, a full urinary bladder may be required, which helps more accurately assess its condition and detect possible abnormalities.

When should you consult a doctor for kidney and bladder ultrasound?

If you experience lower back pain, frequent or painful urination, edema, or abnormal urinalysis results, a kidney and bladder ultrasound is recommended. This examination helps identify diseases at an early stage and initiate timely treatment.

Kidney and bladder ultrasound is available in leading clinics in Belarus, where specialists provide high-quality examinations and individualized treatment recommendations.
