Ultrasound of the hip joints
Ultrasound of the hip joints

Ultrasound examination of the hip joints is an imaging method that allows assessment of the condition of the hip joints and detection of inflammatory processes, injuries, degenerative changes, and other pathologies. This technique is an effective, safe, and painless way to diagnose joint disorders.

When is hip joint ultrasound indicated?

Hip joint ultrasound may be recommended in the following cases:

  • Pain in the hip or hip joint area — acute or chronic pain that may be caused by inflammation, trauma, arthritis, or degenerative joint changes.
  • Limited joint mobility — difficulty moving the hip joint, reduced range of motion, or stiffness.
  • Injuries or contusions — after trauma, falls, or significant impacts that may lead to dislocations, sprains, or other damage.
  • Suspected arthritis or arthrosis — for diagnosing inflammatory processes or degenerative changes such as osteoarthritis.
  • Hernias or tumors — when there is suspicion of tumor formations or hernias in the joint region.
  • Postoperative monitoring — to evaluate treatment outcomes after injuries or surgical interventions on the hip joint.

Advantages of hip joint ultrasound

  1. Safety — ultrasound does not use ionizing radiation and is safe for patients of all age groups, including children and pregnant women.
  2. Painlessness — the procedure causes no pain and is performed without invasive intervention.
  3. Accuracy — ultrasound allows precise detection of inflammatory changes, tissue damage, degenerative alterations, and other hip joint pathologies.
  4. Accessibility — hip joint ultrasound is available in most medical facilities and usually takes only 15–20 minutes.

How is hip joint ultrasound performed?

During hip joint ultrasound, the patient lies on their back or side, and a special gel is applied to the examined area to improve contact between the ultrasound probe and the skin. The physician moves the transducer over the hip and pelvic region, assessing the condition of the joints, soft tissues, and surrounding structures.

Ultrasound makes it possible to visualize joint surfaces, ligaments, muscles, and blood vessels, helping to identify pathological changes such as inflammation, ligament tears, arthritis, and arthrosis.

Hip joint ultrasound is available in leading clinics in Belarus, where qualified specialists provide high-quality examinations and offer individualized treatment recommendations.
