Ultrasound of the gallbladder
Ultrasound of the gallbladder

Gallbladder ultrasound is a painless and non-invasive imaging method that allows assessment of the gallbladder and biliary tract. Using ultrasound, conditions such as cholecystitis, gallstone disease (cholelithiasis), biliary dyskinesia can be diagnosed, as well as structural changes including polyps or tumors. This method is widely used due to its availability, safety, and high diagnostic accuracy.

How is gallbladder ultrasound performed?

The gallbladder ultrasound procedure usually takes 10–15 minutes. The patient lies on an examination table while the specialist applies a special gel to the abdominal area to improve ultrasound wave transmission. The transducer is moved across the abdomen to assess the gallbladder, its wall thickness, and to detect gallstones, polyps, or other abnormalities.

For optimal accuracy, simple preparation measures may be required before the examination, such as fasting or dietary restrictions. Ultrasound enables visualization of possible gallbladder and bile duct pathologies and allows evaluation of the functional state of the organ.

Indications for gallbladder ultrasound

Gallbladder ultrasound is recommended in the following cases:

  • Pain in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen.
  • Frequent nausea or vomiting.
  • Yellowing of the skin or sclera (jaundice).
  • Digestive difficulties, especially after fatty foods.
  • Suspected gallstones in the gallbladder or bile ducts.
  • Chronic cholecystitis or other inflammatory gallbladder conditions.
  • Abnormal laboratory findings, such as elevated bilirubin or liver enzymes.

Ultrasound helps accurately diagnose gallbladder diseases at early stages, enabling timely treatment and prevention of complications.

How to prepare for gallbladder ultrasound?

For best results, the following preparation is recommended:

  • Undergo the examination on an empty stomach (usually 8–12 hours of fasting).
  • Avoid fatty and heavy foods for 2–3 days prior to the test, as they may affect results.
  • If necessary, medications to reduce intestinal gas (e.g., activated charcoal) may be taken 1–2 days before the exam.
  • Avoid excessive fluid intake before the procedure.

Following these recommendations helps ensure accurate and reliable results.
