Ultrasound of the chest organs
Ultrasound of the chest organs

Ultrasound examination of the chest organs is an imaging method that allows assessment of structures located in the thoracic cavity, such as the heart, lungs, and major blood vessels. This technique helps identify a wide range of conditions, including heart diseases, vascular aneurysms, tumors, inflammatory processes, and other pathological changes.

When is chest ultrasound indicated?

Ultrasound of the chest organs may be recommended in the following situations:

  • Suspicion of heart disease — to evaluate cardiac function, detect valvular disorders, heart failure, or pericarditis.
  • Respiratory complaints such as shortness of breath, chronic cough, or chest pain, which may indicate lung or pleural diseases.
  • Pain in the chest area, for example when intercostal neuralgia or pleural inflammation is suspected.
  • Detection of abnormal masses in the chest, such as tumors or cysts.
  • Follow-up monitoring after surgery on the heart, lungs, or major vessels.

Advantages of chest ultrasound

  1. Safety — ultrasound does not involve ionizing radiation and is safe for patients, including pregnant women.
  2. Accuracy — allows detection of abnormalities in chest organs, such as tumors, inflammation, fluid accumulation, as well as valvular heart disease and vascular pathology.
  3. Painlessness — the procedure is noninvasive and does not cause discomfort.
  4. Accessibility — chest ultrasound is widely available and can be performed quickly.

How is chest ultrasound performed?

The examination is performed through the skin. The patient lies on their back, and a special gel is applied to the chest to improve contact between the ultrasound transducer and the skin. The physician moves the transducer over the chest surface to examine the heart, lungs, and major vessels (such as the aorta and vena cava). In some cases, the patient may be asked to hold their breath briefly to obtain more accurate images.

Ultrasound of the chest organs is available in leading clinics in Belarus, where specialists provide high-quality diagnostics and recommend effective treatment strategies.
