Ultrasound of soft tissues
Ultrasound of soft tissues

Soft tissue ultrasound is an imaging examination used to assess the condition of the body’s soft tissues, including muscles, ligaments, tendons, adipose tissue, and skin. This method helps diagnose inflammation, injuries, tumors, cysts, and other abnormalities, making it an important tool in clinical practice.

When is soft tissue ultrasound indicated?

Soft tissue ultrasound may be recommended in the following cases:

  • Soft tissue injuries — bruises, sprains, muscle or ligament tears.
  • Painful lumps or masses in the skin, subcutaneous tissue, or muscles.
  • Swelling or inflammation in the area of joints, ligaments, or other soft tissues.
  • Suspicion of tumors — both benign and malignant lesions.
  • Postoperative assessment — to monitor tissue healing and detect possible complications.
  • Chronic pain in joints, muscles, or ligaments associated with inflammatory or degenerative processes.

Advantages of soft tissue ultrasound

  1. Safety — ultrasound does not use ionizing radiation and is safe for patients.
  2. Accuracy — helps detect soft tissue abnormalities such as tumors, cysts, inflammatory changes, tears, or sprains.
  3. Painlessness — the procedure does not cause pain and does not require anesthesia.
  4. Accessibility — ultrasound is widely available and is a fast and effective diagnostic method.

How is soft tissue ultrasound performed?

The soft tissue ultrasound procedure usually takes about 10–15 minutes. The patient lies on their back or side, depending on the area being examined, while the physician applies a special gel to the skin to improve contact between the ultrasound transducer and the skin. The transducer is then moved over the area of interest, allowing visualization of the soft tissues and assessment of their condition. In cases of injury or inflammation, the patient may feel mild pressure over the affected area, but the procedure is generally painless.

When should you consult a physician for soft tissue ultrasound?

If you experience pain in the joints, muscles, ligaments, or skin, or if there is suspicion of soft tissue injury or tumors, an ultrasound examination is recommended. This study helps identify problems at an early stage and supports selection of the most appropriate treatment.

Soft tissue ultrasound is available in leading clinics in Belarus, where experienced specialists provide high-quality diagnostic examinations and recommend appropriate treatment options.
