Liver elastometry
Liver elastometry

Liver elastometry is a highly accurate and non-invasive diagnostic method that allows assessment of liver stiffness and detection of fibrosis or cirrhosis. This examination is used for early diagnosis of liver diseases such as viral hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and other conditions. Elastometry is an important tool for evaluating the degree of liver damage and monitoring the effectiveness of treatment.

How is liver elastometry performed?

Liver elastometry is performed using a device that generates ultrasound waves and measures the speed at which they pass through liver tissue. This makes it possible to assess liver “stiffness,” which reflects the presence and severity of fibrosis or other structural changes.

The procedure usually takes 10–15 minutes. The patient lies on their back, similar to a standard ultrasound examination. A specialist applies a special gel to the liver area and performs the assessment using a probe. It is important for the patient to remain relaxed during the procedure, as this helps ensure the most accurate results.

Indications for liver elastometry

Liver elastometry is indicated in the following cases:

  • Chronic liver diseases, such as hepatitis (viral, alcoholic, or non-alcoholic).
  • Suspected liver cirrhosis.
  • Elevated transaminase levels in blood tests, which may indicate liver damage.
  • Assessment of liver fibrosis to monitor disease progression.
  • Follow-up during treatment of liver diseases to evaluate therapeutic effectiveness.
  • Suspected fatty infiltration of the liver (steatosis).

Elastometry makes it possible to accurately assess liver condition without the need for invasive procedures such as liver biopsy.

How to prepare for liver elastometry?

Liver elastometry does not require complex preparation. However, the following recommendations are usually advised:

  • Attend the examination on an empty stomach to ensure optimal accuracy.
  • Avoid alcohol and fatty foods for 24–48 hours before the procedure.
  • Temporarily discontinue certain medications, if agreed with the physician.
  • Avoid coffee before the examination, as it may affect the results.

In most cases, strict dietary restrictions or special medications are not required before the examination.

Advantages of liver elastometry

Liver elastometry offers several advantages compared to traditional diagnostic methods:

  • Safety — a non-invasive technique that does not require needles or surgical instruments, minimizing the risk of complications.
  • Accuracy — allows precise assessment of the degree of fibrosis or liver damage, which is essential for early diagnosis and timely treatment.
  • Accessibility — elastometry is available in many medical centers and clinics, including leading clinics in Belarus.
  • Comfort — the procedure is painless and quick, making it convenient for patients.

Liver elastometry not only enables early diagnosis of liver diseases but also allows monitoring of disease progression over time. The procedure is available in leading clinics in Belarus, where specialists provide high-quality examinations and personalized treatment recommendations.
