Duplex scanning (ultrasound)
Duplex scanning (ultrasound)

Duplex ultrasound scanning (DUS) is a modern ultrasound diagnostic method that combines two types of examinations: conventional ultrasound imaging and Doppler ultrasound. This technique provides comprehensive information about the condition of blood vessels, their walls, and blood flow, which is critically important for diagnosing various vascular diseases.

Duplex vascular scanning is a non-invasive and safe method that helps physicians assess the condition of blood vessels, detect pathological changes, and determine appropriate treatment. During DUS, ultrasound waves are used to visualize vascular structures and measure blood flow velocity.

When is duplex ultrasound scanning indicated?

Duplex vascular scanning may be recommended in the following cases:

  • Suspected atherosclerosis.
  • Diagnosis of chronic venous insufficiency and varicose veins.
  • Detection of thrombosis and thrombophlebitis.
  • Frequent headaches, dizziness, or syncopal episodes.
  • Arterial hypertension for monitoring vascular status.

Advantages of duplex ultrasound scanning

  1. Safety — the method does not require contrast agents and does not harm the body.
  2. Accuracy — allows precise assessment of blood vessels and early detection of pathology.
  3. Comfort — the procedure is painless and does not cause discomfort.
  4. Immediate results — findings are available immediately after the examination.

How is the procedure performed?

The DUS procedure does not require special preparation and usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. The patient lies on an examination couch, and the physician applies a gel to the skin to improve ultrasound transmission. A special transducer sends signals that are displayed on the monitor. The patient does not experience pain during the examination, only mild pressure.

Types of duplex ultrasound scanning

  • Arterial scanning — used to detect atherosclerosis, stenosis, and thrombi.
  • Venous scanning — required for diagnosing varicose veins and thrombophlebitis.
  • Carotid artery scanning — used to assess the risk of stroke and cerebrovascular diseases.

How to prepare for DUS?

Preparation for the examination is minimal. It is recommended to refrain from eating for 2–3 hours before the procedure to avoid excessive intestinal gas, which may interfere with the examination.

Where can duplex ultrasound scanning be performed in Belarus?

Duplex vascular scanning is performed in leading medical centers and clinics of the Republic of Belarus, ensuring high-quality examinations and accurate results. For the diagnosis of vascular diseases and health monitoring, patients are advised to consult qualified specialists.

Duplex ultrasound scanning is an important diagnostic tool for vascular diseases, helping to detect problems in a timely manner and prevent more serious complications. Undergoing DUS in highly qualified clinics in Belarus ensures accurate results and attentive patient care.
