Salivary gland scintigraphy is a high-precision radionuclide diagnostic method that allows assessment of salivary gland function and patency of the salivary ducts. The examination helps detect inflammatory processes, obstructions, tumors, and autoimmune diseases.

When is salivary gland scintigraphy required?

In cases of suspected Sjögren’s syndrome, chronic sialadenitis, and salivary duct obstruction. For the detection of tumor processes, salivary secretion disorders, and dry mouth (xerostomia). To assess salivary gland function before surgical interventions or after completed treatment.

How is the procedure performed?

A radiopharmaceutical agent is administered intravenously and accumulates in the salivary glands. A dedicated gamma camera records the distribution of the agent and its excretion. During the examination, salivary stimulation (for example, with citric acid) may be used for a more detailed assessment of glandular function.
