Cardiac scintigraphy
Cardiac scintigraphy

Cardiac scintigraphy is a radionuclide diagnostic method that allows assessment of myocardial perfusion, identification of ischemic areas, and determination of myocardial viability. The examination is used for the diagnosis of coronary artery disease (CAD), myocardial infarction, and evaluation of treatment effectiveness.

When is myocardial scintigraphy required?

In cases of suspected coronary artery disease, angina pectoris, or previous myocardial infarction. For the diagnosis of impaired myocardial perfusion and evaluation of the effectiveness of stenting or coronary artery bypass grafting. To identify areas of myocardial necrosis or ischemia and assess the risk of cardiovascular complications. In the examination of patients with chronic heart failure.

Types of myocardial scintigraphy

  • Myocardial perfusion scintigraphy – assessment of myocardial blood supply at rest and under stress.
  • Metabolic scintigraphy – determination of myocardial viability after myocardial infarction.
  • Single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) of the myocardium – three-dimensional visualization of the heart muscle.

How is the examination performed?

A radiopharmaceutical agent is administered intravenously and accumulates in the myocardium. Scanning is then performed using a gamma camera at rest and, if necessary, after physical or pharmacological stress. The procedure takes 30–60 minutes; special preparation may include temporary avoidance of caffeine and certain medications.

Main advantages of cardiac scintigraphy in Belarus

High accuracy in detecting ischemic changes and areas of necrosis. The possibility of early detection of coronary artery disease and evaluation of treatment effectiveness. Painless procedure, low radiation exposure, and dynamic assessment of myocardial perfusion.

Belarusian medical centers are equipped with modern gamma cameras that ensure accurate diagnosis of heart diseases. Experienced specialists perform the examination with high precision and patient safety.
