Lung scintigraphy
Lung scintigraphy

Lung scintigraphy is a radionuclide diagnostic method that allows assessment of pulmonary perfusion and ventilation, as well as detection of thromboembolism, inflammatory, and oncological processes. The examination is performed with the administration of a radiopharmaceutical agent, which is detected by a gamma camera.

When is lung scintigraphy required?

In cases of suspected pulmonary embolism (PE), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and emphysema. For the diagnosis of inflammatory processes, pneumonia, fibrosis, and oncological diseases. For assessment of lung function prior to surgery and detection of ventilation disorders. During monitoring of the effectiveness of treatment of pulmonary diseases.

Types of lung scintigraphy

  • Perfusion scintigraphy – assessment of pulmonary blood flow, used in suspected pulmonary embolism.
  • Ventilation scintigraphy – analysis of air exchange, used in COPD and emphysema.
  • Combined ventilation–perfusion scintigraphy – a comprehensive examination that allows evaluation of both pulmonary perfusion and ventilation.

How is the examination performed?

A radiopharmaceutical agent is administered intravenously (for perfusion scintigraphy) or inhaled as a radiolabeled aerosol (for ventilation scintigraphy). This is followed by scanning using a gamma camera that records the distribution of the agent in the lungs. The procedure takes 30–60 minutes and does not require special preparation.

Main advantages of lung scintigraphy in Belarus

High sensitivity to pulmonary embolism and ventilation disorders. The ability to detect pathologies that may not be visible on CT or X-ray imaging. Painless procedure, minimal radiation exposure, and dynamic assessment of lung function.

Belarusian medical centers are equipped with modern gamma cameras that ensure accurate diagnosis of lung diseases. Experienced specialists perform the examination with high precision and patient safety.
