X-ray of the stomach
X-ray of the stomach

Gastric X-ray is a radiographic diagnostic method that allows assessment of the condition of the mucosal lining, motility, and shape of the stomach, as well as detection of pathological changes such as ulcers, tumors, and deformities. In most cases, the examination is performed using a contrast agent (barium), which provides clear visualization of the stomach.

When is a gastric X-ray required?

In cases of epigastric pain, heartburn, belching, vomiting, and a feeling of heaviness after meals. For the diagnosis of gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers, polyps, and neoplasms. For detection of gastroesophageal reflux, hiatal hernia, and disorders of gastric motility. In cases of suspected pyloric stenosis, tumors, or perforation of the gastric wall.

How is the examination performed?

The patient ingests a contrast agent (barium suspension) on an empty stomach, after which a series of X-ray images is obtained in different projections. In some cases, a double-contrast technique is additionally used—after barium administration, air is introduced into the stomach to improve visualization of the mucosal relief. The procedure takes 20–40 minutes.

Main advantages of gastric X-ray in Belarus
