X-ray of the esophagus
X-ray of the esophagus

Esophageal X-ray is a radiographic diagnostic method that allows assessment of the shape, structure, and patency of the esophagus, as well as detection of inflammatory, neoplastic, and anatomical changes. The examination is often performed using a contrast agent (barium suspension), which improves visualization of the mucosa and esophageal motility.

When is an esophageal X-ray required?

In cases of pain and burning behind the sternum, difficulty swallowing, regurgitation, and frequent heartburn. For the diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), diverticula, stenoses, scars, and tumors. For detection of hiatal hernia, congenital anomalies, ulcers, and esophageal varices. In cases of trauma, chemical burns, and suspected perforation of the esophageal wall.

How is the examination performed?

The patient drinks a barium suspension, after which a series of X-ray images is obtained in various body positions. The contrast agent coats the esophageal walls, allowing detailed assessment of its contour and function. The procedure takes 15–30 minutes, and special preparation (fasting) is required.
