Mammography is a radiographic diagnostic method for examining the breast that allows detection of benign and malignant neoplasms, cysts, fibroadenomas, and other pathologies at early stages.
When is mammography required?
In cases of breast lumps, pain, nipple discharge, and changes in breast shape. For the diagnosis of mastopathy, cysts, fibroadenomas, and tumors. For early detection of breast cancer and monitoring after treatment. For preventive purposes, mammography is recommended for women over 40 years of age once every 1–2 years.
Types of mammography
- Digital mammography – a modern method with high diagnostic accuracy and reduced radiation exposure.
- Tomosynthesis (3D mammography) – three-dimensional breast imaging that increases diagnostic accuracy.
- Contrast-enhanced mammography – an examination with administration of a contrast agent to assess tissue vascularity.
How is the examination performed?
The patient positions the breast on a special plate of the mammography unit, after which X-ray images are taken in different projections. The procedure takes 10–15 minutes; mild discomfort due to tissue compression is possible.
Main advantages of mammography in Belarus
