Irrigoscopy is a radiographic diagnostic method of the large intestine that allows detection of inflammatory, neoplastic, anatomical, and functional changes. The examination is performed using a contrast agent that fills the intestine and makes its structures clearly visible on X-ray imaging.
When is irrigoscopy required?
In cases of chronic abdominal pain, bowel habit disorders (constipation, diarrhea), bloating, and intestinal bleeding. For the diagnosis of colitis, diverticulitis, polyps, tumors, and developmental anomalies. For the detection of inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis), adhesions, and strictures. During preoperative preparation and postoperative follow-up.
How is the examination performed?
A contrast agent is administered via an enema, followed by a series of X-ray images. In some cases, a double-contrast technique is used—after the introduction of barium, the intestine is insufflated with air, allowing better visualization of the mucosal relief. The procedure lasts 30–60 minutes and requires prior preparation (bowel cleansing).
Main advantages of irrigoscopy in Belarus
High diagnostic accuracy for diseases of the large intestine. The ability to detect tumors, inflammatory processes, and developmental anomalies. Lower burden on the body compared to colonoscopy, with no need for endoscope insertion.
Belarusian medical centers are equipped with modern radiological equipment that ensures detailed diagnosis of diseases of the large intestine. Experienced specialists perform the procedure with minimal discomfort and high accuracy.
