X-ray of the abdominal cavity
X-ray of the abdominal cavity

Abdominal X-ray is a diagnostic method that allows assessment of the condition of the abdominal organs and detection of pathologies of the stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and spleen. The examination is used for the diagnosis of inflammatory, neoplastic, mechanical, and traumatic lesions.

When is an abdominal X-ray required?

In cases of abdominal pain, bloating, vomiting, constipation, and suspected intestinal obstruction. For the diagnosis of perforation of hollow organs, free gas in the abdominal cavity, foreign bodies, and adhesions. For the detection of cholelithiasis, kidney stones, peritonitis, and tumors. In cases of abdominal trauma and suspected internal bleeding.

How is the examination performed?

The patient assumes a supine or standing position, depending on clinical indications. The physician obtains X-ray images in one or several projections. In some cases, a contrast agent is used to improve visualization of the intestines and stomach. The procedure takes 10–20 minutes and, in most cases, does not require special preparation.
