MRI of the sinuses

MRI of the paranasal sinuses is a highly accurate diagnostic method that allows detailed visualization of the maxillary, frontal, sphenoid, and ethmoid sinuses. This technique is used to detect inflammatory, neoplastic, and anatomical abnormalities without the use of ionizing (X-ray) radiation.

When is MRI of the paranasal sinuses required?

The examination is indicated in cases of chronic rhinitis, nasal obstruction, recurrent maxillary sinusitis, frontal sinusitis, and other forms of sinusitis. MRI is also recommended for persistent headaches, a feeling of pressure in the forehead or nasal area, and when cystic lesions or tumors are suspected. It is used to diagnose nasal septum deviation and congenital sinus abnormalities, as well as for preoperative planning and postoperative follow-up.

How is the examination performed?

The patient is positioned inside a magnetic resonance imaging scanner, where the paranasal sinus region is examined. In some cases, a contrast agent is administered to improve visualization of inflammatory changes, tumors, and vascular abnormalities. The procedure takes approximately 20–40 minutes, is painless, and does not involve radiation exposure.
