When is MRI of the ankle joint required?

The examination is indicated in cases of injuries, sprains, dislocations, suspected ligament tears, or cartilage damage. MRI is also performed for chronic pain, limited mobility, and swelling. It is used to diagnose arthritis, osteoarthritis, bursitis, as well as inflammatory and degenerative conditions. The method is recommended during preoperative planning and for postoperative follow-up.

How is the examination performed?

The patient is positioned inside a magnetic resonance scanner, where imaging of the ankle joint is performed. In some cases, contrast enhancement may be used to improve visualization of inflammatory or tumor-related processes. The procedure lasts approximately 20–40 minutes, is painless, and does not involve radiation exposure.
