MRI of the adrenal glands is a non-invasive diagnostic method that allows detailed visualization of adrenal gland structures and helps detect tumors, cysts, inflammatory changes, and hormonal disorders without the use of ionizing (X-ray) radiation.
When is adrenal MRI required?
Adrenal MRI is recommended in cases of suspected hormonal disorders, sudden changes in body weight, persistently high or low blood pressure. It is used for the diagnosis of adrenal tumors (adenomas, pheochromocytomas, carcinomas, metastatic lesions). The examination is also indicated in patients with chronic fatigue, weakness, disturbances of water–electrolyte balance, osteoporosis, as well as for evaluation of adrenal status in Cushing’s syndrome and Addison’s disease.
How is the examination performed?
The patient is positioned inside a magnetic resonance imaging scanner, where detailed scanning of the adrenal glands is performed. In some cases, a contrast agent is administered to improve visualization of vascular structures and tumor processes. The procedure lasts approximately 20–40 minutes, is painless, and does not involve radiation exposure.
